FIFA World Cup 2010
| The world is in a frenzy for soccer as South Africa prepares to host the World Cup in June and July this year. The FIFA World Cup is an international football competition that has taken place every four years since 1930. The tournament itself takes about a month to complete because 32 countries must battle it out on the soccer field though five rounds of games. Out of the 18 tournaments that have been held, seven nations have won the title, and Brazil is by far the best performer, having won the competition five times.
For those of you who may not know much about soccer, here are some basic rules of the game and some terminology that can get you started talking about soccer with ease.
A soccer team can have 10 outfield players and one goalie (or goalkeeper) on the field. Only the goalie is allowed to use his hands to stop the ball.
In order to score a goal, the ball must go over the goal line, between the goalposts, and also under the crossbar. If both teams score an equal number of goals, then the match will end as draw. In some competitions, however, like the World Cup final, the game cannot end as a draw. Instead, the game goes into overtime.
As for penalties, according to FIFA soccer rules, a player will receive a yellow card as a warning of unsportsmanlike behavior. If a player receives two yellow cards, he is then required to leave the field. For serious breaches of conduct, a player will receive a red card and must immediately leave the field without a first warning.
Now that you know a little bit more about the game, try watching it in English! Let』s see who will be the champion this year!
